The Angel Within

blogblogAnaWrap-0186PS5web

It was a couple of weeks ago during the warmest part of our winter here in San Diego, that Ana hired me to create some images of her. She wanted portraits and hoped to have a photo that made her look like a butterfly. She wanted it to show freedom and her personal flight to a new chapter in her life.

I did create the butterfly image, not shown here, and though I loved it, it felt forced – like I had to make it literally look like a butterfly, something I didn’t realize until I got to the editing, but I figured my client would still like it. She did. But then I edited this one. This was inspired by a photo I saw somewhere on-line, but it looks absolutely nothing like it.

This is usually what I do at the end of my client shoots if time allows, is ask them if they’re willing to try something else. Ana always agrees, bless her heart, and this photo is what came. It’s about 4 or 5 images combined and the sky came from Tulum, Mexico. When I completed it, it felt so true to me, and it felt so true to who I know my client, Ana, to be.

When I posted it on Flickr, the word ‘Angel’ came up many times over. I thought it was so interesting because the photo I borrowed from was more of a sexy, wrapped goddess, with lots of darkness around her, but this was how my version emerged.

I ask myself where it came from and all I can say is somewhere inside of me. I’m one who believes in angels and ask for their guidance a lot. I also feel I have angels on earth and one of them is Ana. I suppose it was natural for me to create her this way.

When we’re really true to what feels right to us as we create, the truth is there, right in front of us and sometimes it’s really a beautiful surprise!

This, by the way, was her favorite too, and the one she is using to represent who she is and where she is in her life.

10 on 10: January – Just us Two

I’m so happy to be back to our 10 on 10 posts this year with a lot of new, talented women! I welcome them all and look forward to expanding our circle!

For this month’s post, Phil and I took a break from our hectic work schedules and headed out for a stroll on the beach in La Jolla. It’s one of my favorite places to be, plus it’s been feeling a bit like Summer here in San Diego.

Goodbye and Thank You, 2013!

I was happy to put together this montage of images I created in 2013. Sometimes I forget where I’ve been, what I’ve accomplished, and the experiences I’ve had until I take a good look back. Last year took me to Savannah, Georgia to study with one of my favorite photographers, Heather Evans Smith. It was such a beautiful city, I only wished I’d had more time there and more time with the few amazing women I met there.

One of my favorite experiences of the year was taking a workshop with another favorite photographer in Los Angeles, Brooke Shaden. My favorite image of the year came from this workshop. Brooke is so down-to-earth, and so willing to give information. I learned a lot and look forward to working with her again!

I also went to Tulum, Mexico to photograph my second wedding. It was a great experience for me because I learned, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that weddings are not work that I want to pursue. I love the subject matter but I don’t love the smart phones and ipads and the myriad of cameras that the guests have that get in the way and have to be edited out of the most pivotal shots. Also, I’m more fond of portrait sessions where I can control the time and environment and take my time to create the magic that I envision. What a beautiful place Tulum is though. I took a few of my favorite photos on the white sand beaches with the beautiful turquoise waters on the horizon.

I also went to the sand dunes of Yuma, Arizona twice. The dunes make a beautiful backdrop for the two stunning Norwegian beauties I photographed there.

Sedona, one of the most beautiful places I’ve been in the U.S., was a quick stop for me and my friend Echo, where we saw Javelinas running through the fields at dusk and where I captured one of the most magical shots of Echo near a stream, with the beautiful columns of red rocks behind her.

I’m so grateful for the experiences I had, the lessons I learned, the people I met, and all the inspiration I received.

I wish you all a very Happy, blessed, blissful New Year! Happy 2014!!
